CNW SD40 893 from a Kato SD40 model.

This model started out as a stripped Kato SD40. I hacked out the molded on dynamic brake section and replaced with a cut down Kato SD40-2 non dynamic brake hatch. I also drilled out and added eyebolts as lift rings, new grab irons, fan grab and location for a rotary beacon. I modified the pilot faces to better represent the prototype and added new coupler cut bars and MU hoses. For the unique gong bell mount in the front, I used a chopped down and filed section of styrene tubing with a Detail Associates gong bell casting on the front. A Details West plow was modified and fitted to the front pilot face.

A new Details West speed recorder was added to the conductors side front truck and a Custom Finishes ATS shoe was fitted to the other side.

Everything was abrasivized and washed with hot soapy water and then dried. The unit was primed with Floquil Primer and then sprayed Scalecoat II white where yellow was to be applied. Yellow is Floquil CNW Yellow with several drops of reefer orange and Soo Line red added. The green used was Testor's Model Master Imperial Japanese Navy Green. Black was Floquil engine black. Decals are Microscale. Unit was semi glossed with half Testor's dullcoat and half Testor's glosscoat mixed with lacquer thinner. The unit reassembled and tested.
